 We are born with a certain amount of self-control. It remains consistent over time. I guess some of us are luckier than others!

Self-control is also a limited energy resource that can be depleted. It can be replenished by nutritional calories, by simple sugar or good-for-you protein and healthy snacks that will keep your blood sugar consistent and gives you control longer!

Self-control is also a knowledge resource, that you can increase. You can build it like a muscle if you are consistent and work at it daily, practice.


Our Vices: It seems soothing and harmful, we do it to make ourselves feel good. Then we do it because it worked the last time and it is a familiar, enjoyable, however we might sense that it is not the answer to our problem. Than we start to crave it. It is there to avoid the problem at the moment, and all that matters. Then we depend on it as a coping mechanism, finally we get addicted to it without ever realizing it.

Food: cheap salty, sugary, fatty food does the trick within the food industry. You will sooth yourself every time you don’t want to deal with a problem.

Money: Lack of planning and budget leads to more credit issues and mindless spending.

Gambling: It can easily become an avoiding coping mechanism that leads straight to addiction.

Compulsive buying, collecting: Do you really need an umpteenth pair of shoes or dress? How many vases can you fill with flowers? Remember: Everything will become trash. Everything. We will become ashes.

Drugs: Street drugs, pain killers, you don’t know how you will respond to their addictive nature!

Alcohol: Moderation is the key!

Sex Addiction: Sex can be great with a great partner who knows you and whom you know. Sex is not a coping mechanism to channel frustration, anger, show your power over anybody. Get help!

Social media, Gaming: Social media is not your social circle. Gaming can be good for your brain in small amounts. Everything in moderation! If and when you say no to a personal invite, or rather text than have a coffee with anyone, sound the alarm!
